About the Author

John Wooden was a high school and college coach for forty years. During that time, his teams won more than 80 percent of their games. From 1948 to 1975, his UCLA Bruins teams claimed 10 NCAA national championships, including seven in a row, and at one time won 88 consecutive games. Wooden is in the Basketball Hall of Fame, both as a player and a coach. He originated the Pyramid of Success and was the coauthor with Jay Carty of the bestseller Coach Wooden One-on-One. Coach and his wife, Nellie, were married 53 years when she passed away in 1985. Coach lived to be 99 years of age, passing away on June 4, 2010.JAY CARTY has played for the Los Angeles Lakers, coached basketball at his alma mater, Oregon State, and been a part of John Wooden's UCLA coaching staff. After hanging up his basketball shoes, Carty entered ministry. He has been a traveling preacher and the author of many books, including Playing with Fire, and the coauthor of Coach Wooden One-on-One and Darrell Waltrip One-on-One. Jay and his wife, Mary, live in California.

This is NOT a typical John Wooden book. It's a really a daily devotional. It's a Jay Carty book with a little John Wooden. DO NOT buy this book if you are not expecting to read it as a devotional with scriptures, bible verses, homework assignments, etc. I was disappointed in the book. Waste of my money.

It would be easy to say this book is where sports analogies meets scriptural verse but it's not. As Wooden consistently stresses, the pursuit of results in any sport, game or the game of life for that matter is not defined by the score, winning or other such measures. It's about the achievement of your best self, in every endeavour, from that success is assured. A simple read that makes the point beautifully. Wooden like his decades long marriage & even longer life was simply focused on the dedication to being his best, "and let the results take care of themselves."

Coach Wooden is the ultimate principle architect. His blueprint for life was developed and refined over a life time. He laid a solid foundation of principles that will support all the other principles. The foundation principles are values that if implemented will set the example and attract others to follow your leadership. The second level are principles of self discipline that when demonstrated consistently show others you are a person who is in control of theirself. The third level are principles of both ability and camaraderie that draw individuals into a close knit team. The fourth level are the keys to the cap stone of competitive greatness. These two building blocks are crucial to individual success and when cultivated are displayed outwardly as sure sign of success. Like any great architect Coach included the mortar that is a necessity to hold the principles together. These mortar principles hold the block principles together because they incorporate deep inner seated values that intertwine and cause the block principles to withstand the test of time.

Absolutely love this book. It's spiritually based and has helped me with relationships, job, and so many other areas in my life. A good Bible study tool since it offers scriptures to read at the end of each section. More than I expected to get out of this book. I highly recommend it.

Reading this now. Worth ever minute invested. The definition of success is as clear and within my control as any definition I've ever read. The building blocks and mortar are the components of the excellence we seek from ourselves. Study of these components can only lead to better character and performance within the team.

Coach John Wooden was legendary for his success in coaching UCLA basketball teams which won 7 consecutive NCAA titles and a total of 10, as well as winning 88 straight games. But people off the court have also recognized him as a great teacher.His "Pyramid for Success" is a widely used motivational, self-help method/book, and it is filled with useful life information. His definition of success, for example, is very useful for those distracted by more worldly and more selfish measures of success. For Wooden, success is "a peace of mind that is the direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming." Anyone who reads this book will not fail to come away with some important lessons in life.I also like the way that Jay Carty has taken Wooden's principles and then applied them to the life of Christians from the Bible: what a wonderful enhancement to Wooden's work!I do, however, have 2 criticisms of the book. First, I'm not convinced that all of the 15 "building blocks" and 10 "mortar qualities" necessarily build on each other the way the book implies. They seem more like disjointed points which, though excellent, don't add up to a coherent vision to understand and live life. My second criticism is that by building a devotional book on top of Wooden's pyramid, one comes away sometimes with the idea that one is building up oneself in terms of faith or salvation. Wooden's advice is based on human experience and endeavor and doesn't begin with the gospel of grace. For this reason, the devotional part of the book, while very useful in some ways, is insufficient and even misleading.

Bought this as a gift because I already have a copy that I love. This book was introduced to me by a mentor years ago and it’s teachings always hold true.

I liked this book because I admire and respect Coach Wooden's philosophy so much. I was surprised by how much religion is in this book. The other author, Jay Carty is a Christian minister, and his passages are almost all related to the Bible. I don't believe in organized religion, so I was a little turned off by that part. Overall, this is good inspiring book with a fantastic message.

In Secret Source: The Law of Attraction Is One of Seven Ancient Hermetic Laws: Here Are the Other Six authors Maja D'aoust and Adam Parfrey break down the ancient Hermetic teachings that have led to the recent outbreak of self-help ideas and schools of New Thought that are taking over the gullible masses.

The Law of Attraction seems to be the most popular of the Hermetic laws but it isn't the only one. The belief system behind these laws goes back thousands of years and has been studied, and expanded upon, by some of the greatest philosophical minds of the ages. The authors break down each law in turn, explaining its significance and how it interrelates to the other laws. They also go into great detail about the volumes that inspired so much of the ideas, such as The Emerald Tablet and The Kybalion. The reader is introduced to not only the minds that gave birth to these ideas but those that carried it into the various New Thought movements.

Though the subject matter is at times a little deep and the philosophies can be somewhat esoteric, the authors have done a good job of laying everything out in terms that are understandable without being dumbed-down. They strip the "secret" out of The Secret and show that the Law of Attraction isn't something that should be trifled with for greedy personal gain. This is not a novel in the traditional fashion. What it is, is a collection of letters, documents, newspaper clippings, and photos. These start way back with Lewis and Clark and go all the way forward to now. It’s a bit slow in the first 100 pages but after that the collection hits its stride. It becomes suggestive, gloomy, and quirky; much like the series.The attention to detail is really nice. The footnotes are distracting, but they do add to the overall body and contain their own add-in of data. The cover is beautiful, and I am surprised the price wasn’t higher. The cover is highly embossed and gives it the feel of a book much older than it is. It is apparent that pride was taken in making this, and it is something that Mark Frost should be proud to have his name on.Does it answer questions?Heck yes it does. Sometimes those answers are subtle; a single line in a document. Other times it’s a headline about a bank explosion that you can’t un see. DON’T flip through it casually if you want to read it the whole way through. Yes, the answers are there for a whole lot of things you may have wondered, and a lot of things that may not have dawned on you no matter how many times you have read it.Are there any bad points?Maybe. It depends on what you want. If you want something that tells the story in a way that is very fitting of the Twin Peaks world, this is the book for you. If you want a novel to just read through, you may be disappointed. The one bad thing for me was about every 50 pages there would be something incorrect for the time period, like cellophane on a 1947 pack of cigarettes, or a 1800s’ era person using a bit of modern slang. This isn’t an issue once it gets to the 1960s’ and if you are not big into history it’s quite possible that you wouldn’t even notice. It just broke the continuity for me which was a bummer since I was trying to get back into the Twin Peaks feel.A lot of material produced for a TV show or movie tend to be filler to make more dollars from a franchise. This book was written for fans, by folks who care about the fans and the Twin Peaks world. It answers a lot of questions, but still leaves enough unsaid that season three will be very welcome. I think this book does exactly what Mark Frost said it would, bridge the gap between the seasons.

Some are true revelations.What’s past is truly prologue here, and as I ravenously devoured this today over the course of 6 ½ hours I returned back to my 18 year old self who was so mesmerized and taken all those years ago with this spiritual procedural. Such rich texture has been afforded to us here it might take several readings to absorb the possibilities! Thank you, Mr. Frost for your due diligence in choosing to enlighten us with the broad strokes and the pinpoint brushes. It Is Happening Again.

I ordered the Kindle version of this book and just started it earlier today. Mark Frost's book looks awesome, and I can't wait to read all of it. But I would recommend that it NOT be ordered in Kindle format, as some of the 'documents' in the book show up so small that it's impossible to read them; this is like scanned text or photocopies, not Kindle text, so increasing the font size doesn't do anything to help. I am SOOOO looking forward to 'Twin Peaks - 25 Years Later' on Showtime in 2017 - all this new TP activity is really exciting!!!

Kindle version is garbage. I feel ripped off, which detracted from a book I was very excited about. I also got the audio version, which I liked very much. The story itself wasn't a disappointment. Anyone wanting to exlore the mysteries of Twin Peaks a little deeper should certainly check out this book. Just make sure to avoid the kindle version because really important parts of the story are completely unreadable due to very small text that cannot be enlarged.
